E LITERACY FOR ALL -THE DREAM PROJECT IS ON

E LITERACY programme is going on in Kamballur ,a village in East Eleri Panchayath in Kasargod of Kerala with the first batch of 20 members trying to achieve skills in operating computers. A 30-hour module was set for the course which is part of a participatory village project envisaged by the national service scheme unit in GHSS KAMBALLUR and the first class was conducted last Saturday 9/7/2016 with the help of trained NSS volunteers.Mathew K.D ,The principal of the school inaugurated the session in a function presided over by grama panchayath member ,Sulochana M M . 7 NSS volunteers and 20 villagers participated.Radhakrishnan C K and Manojkumar.K.N both the higher secondary teachers in the school are the coordinators of the programme. The smart room facility including 10 computers was provided by the PTA of GHSS KAMBALLUR.The first module was to familiarise the people with the process of opening, operating and closing a computer/ an android mobile set.Providing basic training in using a word file /excel /ppt file were also included.

The second session of the course was conducted today, 17/7/2016. 10 volunteers of the NSS functioned as trainers.20 villagers are participating as trainees. The programme went on for 2 hours in the morning. The volunteers of NSS got training in the module first. Then it was the students providing training to the villagers in the next session.Radhakrishnan C K and Manojkumar.K.N coordinated the event.

It is evident that the programme- perhaps the first of its kind in the state of Kerala which runs free of cost - benefits the students in three levels .First it is an opportunity for the volunteers to get refreshed in IT and in the process of teaching and thus enhance their personality. Then it helps the villager to handle computers and android mobiles effectively in this modern era of E -banking,online tests and online payments.again it ensures that the IT facilities provided to a rural government school is utilIsed meaningfully. The course is aimed at making all the villagers in the ward no.13 and 14 e-literates within the next five years. The target of this year is to complete 5 batches of a total of 100 trainees.

Finding sponsorship to provide more computer facilities and space for training , ensuring more volunteer teachers and providing follow-up activities to the new e-learners are the challenges identified in this project. The banking institutions and local administrative organisations can play a role in strengthening and extending this movement for total e-literacy in the district of Kasargod as the proposed IT parks in Cheemeni and other similar projects require such communities as their backbones. It will be easy to introduce IT based small industries in the villages with an e conscious environment around and thus this programme can pave the way for a thrust in rural development ,which will ultimately strengthen our Nation.
